Bombers target airport
Bombers target airport - A bomb exploded near an airport built by a US gold mining giant in Papua Province. No one was injured in the attack which occurred two days after unknown militants set off two small bombs on a road leading up to the mine operated by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold. Separatist rebels in the province have long denounced the mine as a symbol of Jakarta's rule over the region.
Worshippers crushed to death - Twenty-one people were killed and 11 others injured in a stampede in the East Javan town of Pasuruan. They were crushed to death as 5,000 people lined up in an alleyway to receive cash handouts, a common form of charity by wealthy Indonesians during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. A local businessman has been arrested and faces five years in jail for his role in organizing the event.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced he would step down and turn power over to his deputy Najib Razak in March next year to prevent his United Malays National Organization party from breaking apart. The UMNO forms the core of the ruling National Front coalition, which has ruled Malaysia ever since independence from Britain in 1957.

Streets of blood
Two people died and over 450 were injured when police broke up anti-government protests in Bangkok in what has been called the worst violence in over a decade in Thailand. Protesters, who have controlled the compound of the prime minister's office since August 26, vowed vengeance for those killed in the clashes.
